How Immigration Lawyers Get Clients: Lead Generation Options Compared

Referrals, directories, purchased prospects, organic search, Local Services Ads and Google Search ads all bring in inquiries. The channel that pays is the one with the lowest cost per signed retainer as a share of retainer value, and we measure each against that.

The Options

Immigration Attorney Marketing Channels Compared

Most firms use more than one channel. The question is which one you can scale without losing control of lead quality.

Referrals and directories

Past clients and bar directories send pre-sold inquiries at low cost. Volume does not move when the firm adds an attorney or opens a new practice area.

Purchased lead lists

Vendors deliver volume fast. The same inquiry often goes to competing firms, so you compete on speed to dial rather than on fit. The vendor controls quality.

SEO and content

Rankings cost little per inquiry once established. They take a year or more to build, and much immigration search volume is research, such as processing times or form fees, not hiring intent.

Local Services Ads

Google's pay-per-lead ad unit at the top of local search results. Immigration lawyer services is an eligible category in the United States. You pay for valid leads, not clicks.

Google Search ads

Budget, targeting and lead quality respond within days. It is the channel where signed retainer values can retrain the bidding directly.

What we recommend

Run Local Services Ads alongside Search. Build the tracking so both channels report cost per signed retainer, not cost per inquiry.

The Benchmark

Cost per Signed Retainer Should Stay Under 25% of the Retainer

A fixed cost-per-lead target does not work for immigration. A $15,000 PERM case and a $2,500 family petition cannot share one lead price. Measure acquisition cost as a percentage of retainer value instead.

Operator benchmark (Juan Colicchio, LGG Media): cost per signed retainer should stay under 25% of retainer value. On a $5,000 retainer, that is under $1,250. On a $15,000 employment case, it is under $3,750.

This is a field benchmark from running law firm accounts. It is not a Google figure. It works across practice areas because it scales with what each case is worth.

Most immigration firms optimize toward free consultation forms. The algorithm then treats a $2,500 family petition and a $15,000 PERM case as the same win and fills the calendar with whichever is cheaper to buy. You cannot hold a percentage-of-retainer target until the retainer value reaches the ad platform.

Build vs Buy

Buying Leads vs Building Your Own

What differs is what the ad platform gets to learn from.

A lead vendor can optimize on a form fill scored by the answers in it, or on an inbound call that crosses a duration threshold. It optimizes those signals across every firm it resells the inquiry to. It never learns whether your firm signed the case.

Your own infrastructure can optimize on consults held and on signed retainer value by case type. These signals exist only inside your CRM. Only your own ad account can use them for your practice alone.

We push the full retainer value to Google Ads at signing as the conversion value, not cash collected.

Operator view: building in-house beats buying leads at about $1,000 per day in ad spend.

Local Services Ads

How Local Services Ads Work for Immigration Lawyers

Google documents Local Services Ads as pay-per-lead. You pay for valid leads that contact you through the ad, such as a phone call you answer or a message.

You set an average weekly budget and a bidding mode for the most you will pay per lead. Google assesses each lead when the prospect first makes contact and does not charge for leads it finds invalid or low quality. Charged leads can get automatic credits later if Google's models reassess them as low quality.

One detail matters for law firms. If you are in a law category and turn on general lawyer leads, Google does not credit a lead for any type of law service. Opting in tells Google you want general law leads.

Businesses that pass Google's screening show the Google Verified badge. Google lists license or business registration, headshots and reviews among the requirements for professional categories.

Local Services Ads bill per lead, while Search bills per click and can learn from signed retainer value through offline conversion import. Run both and judge each on cost per signed retainer.

Case Study

What Changed When a Firm Stopped Optimizing on Free Forms

A national immigration firm came to LGG Media in 2018 spending $30,000 per month. Its prior campaigns optimized on free inquiry forms, with no record of which inquiries became clients.

We connected Salesforce to Google Ads so each paid consultation and each signed retainer went back to the account with the original click attached. Ads and landing pages then asked prospects to book a $150 paid consultation instead of submitting a free form.

Retainer conversion from paid-consultation prospects ran at 30 percent, against about 5 percent from free inquiries. Cost per inquiry went up, but more of the inquiries signed. Cost per signed retainer held at about $1,200 on a $5,000 average retainer, about 24 percent, inside the 25% benchmark. The account scaled to $150,000 per month and held a 4.2x ROAS for more than four years.

Google Search Ads

How Google Search Ads Work for an Immigration Firm

Separate campaigns by practice area, because each one carries a different retainer value.

Employment and business cases (EB-1, H-1B, O-1, PERM) can run value-based target ROAS. Family and adjustment of status cases run on target CPA or value-capped target ROAS, so the algorithm cannot chase raw volume at low margin. Removal defense and asylum run in their own group on strict target CPA, with ad schedules matched to intake that answers around the clock.

An account-wide negative list blocks queries such as USCIS login, case status, form pdf, processing time and free legal aid. These searches have volume but no hiring intent.

Policy news, such as an H-1B lottery announcement, floods search with informational queries. Google documents seasonality adjustments as a tool for short events of 1 to 7 days. They tell Smart Bidding to expect a conversion rate change without resetting its history.

Google Ads offline conversion import lets you save the Google Click ID (GCLID) with each lead and send it back with the full retainer value when the prospect signs. Google now recommends enhanced conversions for leads as the upgraded version of that import. If a signed case falls through, you can restate or retract its value. Google gives 7 days after a conversion is first recorded for the adjustment to reach automated bidding, and 54 days overall for reporting.

Common Questions

What a Signed Retainer Should Cost

How do immigration lawyers get clients?

Most firms combine several channels. Referrals bring the warmest inquiries but do not scale on demand. For predictable volume, run Local Services Ads alongside Search and judge both on cost per signed retainer.

What should an immigration firm pay to acquire a client?

Keep cost per signed retainer under a quarter of the retainer's value. It is an LGG Media field benchmark, not a Google figure, and it holds across practice areas because it scales with each case.

Should immigration firms buy leads?

Purchased leads arrive fast, but vendors often resell the same inquiry to competing firms, and the vendor never learns which inquiries signed. In our experience, building in-house beats buying leads at about $1,000 per day in ad spend.

Do Local Services Ads work for immigration lawyers?

Immigration lawyer services is an eligible Local Services Ads category in the United States. You pay per valid lead rather than per click. We recommend running it alongside Google Search ads.

How long does SEO take for an immigration law firm?

A year or more to build rankings that produce steady inquiries, and much immigration search volume is self-service research rather than hiring intent.
