Google Ads Budget and Learning Period Calculator
Estimate the ad spend you need to reach a Smart Bidding conversion threshold, and how many days your campaign may stay in learning at your daily budget.
Your average CPC, or Keyword Planner's estimate for a new campaign.
Conversions divided by clicks, for the conversion action your bid strategy optimizes to.?
Average daily budget for the campaign, or for all campaigns in a portfolio strategy.
Google's UK help page says learning can take up to around 50 conversion events or 3 conversion cycles.?
Typical days from click to conversion. Used for the "3 conversion cycles" part of Google's learning guidance.
Estimated spend to reach 50 conversions
Estimated days to exit learning
Published minimum: 15 conversions in 30 days
Meets the published minimum at this budget.
Every number here is an estimate. It assumes you spend your full daily budget each day at your average CPC and conversion rate.
| Conversion rate | Estimated spend | Estimated days |
|---|
Spend needed = conversions needed × CPC ÷ conversion rate. Days = spend needed ÷ daily budget, rounded up. Google does not publish a formula for the learning period, so the learning figures are planning estimates, not a prediction of when the Learning status will clear.
Where the Thresholds Come From
Google publishes two kinds of numbers. The first is a minimum: Target ROAS on Search and Shopping needs "at least 15 conversions in the past 30 days at the conversion tracking level." Demand Gen and Video action campaigns have their own minimums, shown in the preset buttons. Target CPA and Maximize conversions have no published minimum. Google says advertisers "can start using Target CPA with no conversion history."
The second is guidance on how long learning takes. Google's UK English help page says it "can take up to around 50 conversion events or 3 conversion cycles." The US English page says "a few conversion cycles (1-2 typically)." We checked both on September 29, 2026. The calculator shows the 50-event and 3-cycle figures side by side, because Google does not say which comes first. The conservative estimate takes the later of the two.
A setting change, a new strategy, or adding or removing campaigns from a strategy can start a new learning period. Google lists these three triggers on the same page. If you plan to change targets during a test, add another learning period to your budget.
LGG field practice, not a Google rule
How We Run the First 4 Weeks
"We aim to be done with the learning period within 4 weeks," says Juan Colicchio. The sequence LGG Media uses:
Weeks 1 and 2: Maximize conversions.
Weeks 3 and 4: Maximize conversion value.
Then: set a Target ROAS, using our ROAS target calculator to pick the number.
Google does not publish a 4-week rule. For comparison, Google's Target ROAS page recommends reporting conversion values "for 4 weeks or 1-2 conversion cycles (whichever is longer)" before you turn on value-based bidding. Our conversion value calculator sets those values when you bid on more than one funnel stage. Google lists a new strategy and a setting change as Learning triggers, so each switch in this sequence can start a new learning period.
Strategy names follow Google Ads Help. Since June 2026, Google labels "Maximize conversion value with a Target ROAS" as "Target ROAS".

Frequently asked questions
How much budget do I need to get out of the Google Ads learning period?
Multiply the conversions you need by your cost per conversion. At an $8.50 CPC and a 5% conversion rate, each conversion costs about $170, so 50 conversions cost about $8,500. At $1,000 a day that is about 9 days of spend. Google's guidance also mentions 3 conversion cycles, so a long sales cycle can keep learning going longer than the spend alone suggests.
How many conversions does Target ROAS need?
Google's help page says Search and Shopping campaigns need at least 15 conversions in the past 30 days at the conversion tracking level. Demand Gen needs at least 50 conversions in the past 35 days in the campaign, with 10 in the past 7 days, or 100 across Demand Gen campaigns in the account. Video action campaigns need at least 30 conversions in the past 30 days.
Does Target CPA need a minimum number of conversions?
No. Google says advertisers can start using Target CPA with no conversion history. The learning period still applies, so the calculator's learning estimate is still useful for Target CPA.
How does this Google Ads cost calculator work?
It divides your CPC by your conversion rate to estimate cost per conversion, multiplies that by the conversions you need, and divides the result by your daily budget to estimate days. For the learning period it also multiplies your conversion cycle by 3.
Why are the results only estimates?
Real CPCs and conversion rates change from day to day, Google can spend more or less than your daily budget on a given day, and conversions can arrive days after the click. Google also does not publish a formula for when the Learning status clears. Use the numbers to plan budget and test windows, then check the bid strategy status in your account.
